    My g g grandfather enlisted as a second fireman on 20th may 1861, he was living in Boston, MA. He was promoted to 1st fireman and mustered out on 15th March 1862. I’m intrigued to know what Firemen did on board the ships and how to find out which ship he served on. Any insights welcome.

    Also still not 100% sure whether he joined the union or confederate navy and don’t know yet how to find out.
