How useful is the new Bluejackets book as an historical resource? Havent gotten to view book yet, and price is a bit steep.

    What does the fleet think?

I have a copy of the book and would make the following observations:

It draws together many images that are spread over the net and brings them together into one print publication.  A large proportion of the images are readily found on the net if you have decent search skills and spend some time.  There are some images from non published collections to further illustrate the common ones.  The book is a convenient single place to refer to.

The author does not delve deeply into the historical back ground of the clothing nor does he show construction, examination of materials, evidence of type of use, etc.  As I *think* many of these images were gathered from web sources and dealer’s web sites those sorts of details aren’t usually posted.  Entire books have been written about specific items like Federal sack coats or buckles or buttons.  That this single book should not be as detailed is to be expected. For some one who has never seen any original items, this book would be a useful survey.

Hopefully, as interest in this forum grows, people will post pictures of what they have collected and we can examine, discuss and share what we find.

    John
